The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme is a major government initiative aimed at rebuilding and renewing school facilities in England to 21st century standards. In Tameside, BSF has meant an investment of approximately £300 million for the Tameside BSF programme and formed part of the UK Government’s £45 billion Building Schools for the Future programme to create better secondary and special schools to teach and learn in.

inspiredspaces and its joint venture partners in the Local Education Partnership (LEP), which comprises of Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, BSF Investments Limited and Carillion, has potential to deliver twelve secondary and special schools, at a capital cost of £173 million in wave 3 of the BSF programme.

inspiredspaces and its joint venture partners in the LEP, reached financial close on the first wave of schools in February 2009, and the second wave of schools in April 2010 in the £300 million Tameside Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The first wave of schools reached financial close in February 2009 and includes two Privately Financed schools – Mossley Hollins High school and St Damian’s RC Science College, and two Design and Build schools which reached financial close in September 2009 – New Charter Academy and Samuel Laycock School.

The second wave of schools reached financial close in April 2010 and includes six new schools, five are Privately Financed Schools – Hyde Technology School, Dale Grove School, Globe Lane KS4 Learning Centre, Denton Community College and Denton KS3 Learning centre, Droylsden Academy is the only Design and Build scheme in this wave.

Carillion will provide facilities management services over the 25 year concession period, with an approximate value of £21million for all 12 schools. All schools in the BSF programme will be completed by the end of 2012.

The LEP will deliver all aspects of the BSF process from inception to completion, helping Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council’s educational transformation through the procurement of innovative school accommodation and related services. By creating radically improved school environments and educational climates, inspiredspaces in partnership with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council will create the transformational step change for learners and the wider communities.

To Date

The Tameside BSF programme now has 10 major projects on site. Mossley Hollins High School and St Damian’s RC Science College commenced on site in February 2009, with New Charter Academy and Samuel Laycock School commencing in September 2009.

Hyde Technology School, Dale Grove School, Globe Lane KS4 Learning Centre, Denton Community College and Denton KS3 Learning Centre projects commenced on site following financial close in April 2010, with Droylsden Academy commencing on site shortly after, in May 2010.

inspiredspaces continue to deliver numerous “Injected Works” schemes during 2010, to agreed programme & budget. The current pipeline includes works at Greenside Primary School (Access and canopy works) and Poplar Street (Childrens Centre Formation), both with proposed start dates of summer 2010.

In addition, inspiredspaces are also working closely with TMBC to progress the Primary Capital Programme schemes. The proposal aims to remodel and transform the educational requirements of Primary Schools with proposed start dates of early 2011.
